Where Do Beef Emissions Come From?
Beef's carbon footprint breaks down roughly as follows: enteric fermentation (methane from cattle digestion) accounts for about 40% of total emissions; feed production (growing crops for animal feed, including fertiliser, irrigation, and harvest) accounts for roughly 25%; land-use change (deforestation for pasture and feed crops, especially in Latin America) contributes about 20%; and processing, transport, and retail make up the remaining 15%. Unlike most other foods, the majority of beef emissions happen on the farm itself — not during transport or retail.
