How Flight Emissions Are Calculated
Flight emissions depend on distance, aircraft type, load factor (how full the plane is), and seating class. Short-haul flights produce more CO2 per km (about 255 g/passenger-km) because takeoff and landing are the most fuel-intensive phases. Long-haul flights are more efficient per km (about 195 g/passenger-km) but cover much greater distances, so total emissions are higher. Business class produces roughly 3x the emissions of economy because the seats take up more space, and first class can be 4-5x higher.
