Cradle to Cradle is one of the most rigorous product certifications in existence, evaluating products at the molecular level across five categories: Material Health, Product Circularity, Clean Air & Climate Protection, Water & Soil Stewardship, and Social Fairness. Products are rated Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum.
Official websiteC2C evaluates: Material Health (every ingredient at 100 ppm is assessed for toxicity), Product Circularity (designed for recycling, composting, or reuse), Clean Air & Climate Protection (renewable energy use, GHG reduction), Water & Soil Stewardship (water use, effluent quality), and Social Fairness (labor rights, community impact). The lowest-scoring category determines the overall level.
Manufacturers work with C2C-accredited assessment bodies to inventory all materials and chemicals in the product down to 100 parts per million. Each ingredient is rated against toxicity databases. The product is then evaluated across all five categories. Certification requires meeting minimum thresholds in every category.
The high cost and complexity of material disclosure can exclude smaller manufacturers. Some products certified at Bronze level may still contain problematic chemicals. The certification focuses on individual products rather than company-wide practices, so a company could certify one product while its operations remain unsustainable.

C2C goes beyond recycling to evaluate whether materials are safe, healthy, and designed for continuous cycles. It considers the quality of materials in the next use cycle, not just whether they can be collected.
Platinum is the highest level, requiring all material ingredients to be optimized and verified as safe, 100% renewable energy, and advanced water stewardship.
