The Carbon Trust Standard certifies organizations that genuinely measure, manage, and reduce their carbon emissions year-on-year. Unlike carbon neutral claims based on offsets alone, this certification requires demonstrated operational emission reductions.
Official websiteThe standard assesses carbon footprint measurement methodology, management processes, year-on-year emission reductions, and governance. Organizations must show actual reductions in their operational emissions (Scope 1 and 2, with Scope 3 encouraged). The certification also covers water and waste footprints.
Organizations measure their carbon footprint following recognized protocols (GHG Protocol or ISO 14064), then demonstrate year-on-year reductions over a minimum 2-year period. An independent assessor verifies the data and reduction claims. The standard requires ongoing reductions to maintain certification.
The standard is primarily UK and EU focused, limiting its global recognition. The focus on year-on-year reductions can disadvantage organizations that have already made significant cuts. Some argue the standard doesn't adequately address Scope 3 supply chain emissions.
